um...

Originally, I posted this to FB, figuring it was no more than a passing status. But really, I want to remember this one, so I'm putting it up here as well.

Looking at the Drouin collection (genealogical birth, marriage, and death records taken by priests in the 1800s and early 1900s), I had a bit of difficulty finding a certain marriage record. Turns out that the person who transcribed it for the search engine has turned the name "Thérèse" into "Hussein".

um.... wtf?

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

i've found a veritable wealth of "bachelors" and even a few "bachelorettes" in my genealogical research. curiosity prompts me to ask: how many of these were gay? ugly? "simple"? there are so many questions and we'll just never know.

after hours of typing in the same locations again and again, i started wondering where exactly Étang-du-Nord was. my brain kept associating it with Petit-Étang and Grand-Étang, the locations of which i had already looked up, but they're in NB and this one is in Quebec. GoogleMaps to the rescue... and all of a sudden, i'm staring at a satellite image of a teeny, tiny island in the middle of nowhere. no wonder they're all living and dying there - it must be a heck of a trip to get to the mainland - which, btw, would be PEI.

turns out it's part of the Ile-aux-Grues archipelago - which also includes Grosse-Ile, the infamous quarantine center for Irish immigrants in the mid 1800s.

Autumn

the days are beautiful, crisp fall days, sunny and cloudy by turns, with a chilly breeze and swirling leaves. i love this part of autumn, the relaxing of the stifling heat and humidity, the leaves changing colors, the way your nose gets a little cold while you walk. it's perfect strolling weather.

i've been cooking, baking, plotting and planning. the spaghetti sauce seems to be a success, though we'll only really know tonight. the muffins are a mystery. the apple pie is the next step. mmm, fall is perfect for baking - i can heat up the apartment using candles and the oven (cause our heating doesn't turn on til October 31st, i suspect).

i've also decided to try my hand at NaNoWriMo this year. i've been eyeing it with a mixture of trepidation and curiosity for several years now; i figure it'll be the perfect way to break through that motivational block that's crippling me at the moment. for those that don't know, here's the premise of it:

write 50,000 words between November 1st and 30th. that's it. i've signed up already and have my own website so you can all keep track of what i'm up to (and either cheer me on or shame me when i fall behind!) - for anyone interested, it's here. i predict November will be a hectic month...

i'm also back in the swing of things genealogy-wise. there's something inherently satisfying about all those names and generations.
