so, here goes, even though i know for a fact that i'm forgetting somebody (my mind is a seive & i apologize in advance).

King: SG, of course. patient, powerful.
Queen: me. versatile and quick to react.
Bishops: belfana and Blondie. both hide their natural strengths behind quiet facades, but can move to protect wherever they are needed, even if they get there in a bit of a roundabout manner.
Knights: ford and phthisic. no one's ever quite sure where they're going, but they're always standing right between you & the enemy when you need them to be.
Rooks: lindvior and bigdoggie. staunchly loyal, zealous protectors who are always the first to attack & the last to give up.
Pawns: all the people who've stuck by me, standing between me & disaster. you all deserve to be knighted.
There's more of a 'yeah, you think I'm vulnerable there. But you see, over there, that piece that seems completely unable to eat you alive and spit the pieces back your homies, that one, the one that seems to be doing something else? Yeah, you make one wrong move and he'll wring your neck like a chicken.' piece.
But yeah, knights are kewl.
technically every piece on the board stands between the enemy and the king, no?

True.

True, very true. But of them I was taught to respect knights, due to their lack of directness. They get into place other pieces can't and must be watched for that exact reason. I've chewed away many a rook or bishop sitting comfortably behind enemy lines, with my trusty knights. Heck, I've gone for check once or twice that way.
