I've managed to do a fair bit of reading/movie watching this month... More than I'd thought, actually. Getting the new year off to a good start.
Books:
* The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank - technically reread, as I read this sometime when I was much younger, but I thought it might be time for a refresher
* La valise d'Hana by Karen Levine - another research book, but absolutely fascinating. A very light read and very enlightening as to how you can approach something so monumental as the Holocaust with one simple object.
* War and Genocide: A Concise History of the Holocaust by Doris L. Bergen - this was the book recommended to me to brush up on my knowledge, and it is superbly written. It covers not just the Jews but all people touched by the Holocaust and is both accessible and thought-provoking.
* The Iron Hunt by Marjorie M. Liu - I must say, I'm enjoying this series far more than I expected to. Campy but fun, not too romance-y, with great characters and interesting plot twists.
* Darkness Calls by Marjorie M. Liu
* A Wild Light by Marjorie M. Liu
Movies:
* 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - on the big screen, no less. It's good to know where all those references are coming from; Red Dwarf makes so much more sense now. I kept picturing a ballet, for some reason... though I still have absolutely no idea what was happening.
* Reclaiming the Blade (2009) - odd little documentary on swordplay and its place in both history and the modern world.
* The Help (2011) - quite well done, I will admit, mostly because the characters are just so very well played.
* Creation (2009) - another odd one, a biopic about Charles Darwin. Not terrible but not great either, even with the addition of Benedict Cumberbatch.
* The Godfather (1972) - also on the big screen, which was marvelous. A brilliant movie, I'm surprised I waited so long to see it.
