A bit of an advance book list, since the next few days are going to be insanely hectic...
Books:
* You Against Me by Jenny Downham - I was looking for light, teen reading. This was not light, or fluffy. It's a story of how rape, or the accusation of rape (the book leaves you wondering for most of it), can tear lives apart.
* The Space Between by Brenna Yovanoff - another teen read. I was a little wary when I discovered it was about angels and demons (immediately off-putting for me), but I loved her first book, so I took a chance. This was good, and cute, and funny, and just an all-around nice read.
* Divergent by Veronica Roth - I'd been told this was an "if you liked the Hunger Games, you'll like this" book. I was skeptical, but looking for those light teen reads, so I picked it up. This was gritty and fantastical and gripping, keeping my interest right to the end. There are things I preferred in Divergent, and things I preferred in the Hunger Games... but I'd definitely recommend this.
* Dragonsdawn by Anne McCaffrey - with her death, I felt like I should revisit Pern, just a little. =)
* Tuer le pere by Amélie Nothomb - one of my requisite French books. It was interesting, but I'm glad it was short.
Movies:
* The Red Baron (2008) - an interesting movie about WWI flying aces, but I just couldn't seem to get into it at all. The person cast as the Red Baron had an uncanny resemblance to the historical person, though.
* Never Let Me Go (2010) - I had no idea that this had a sci-fi premise when I started watching. It was a good movie, but I kept expecting it to go just a bit farther. It was predictable and a little slow-paced.
Other:
* Neko Case, in concert! The first concert I've attended in nearly a year. It was in what amounted to a high school auditorium (the pictures of the place made it seem so much grander), but it was a small venue and a great concert for all that. Neko's sense of humor was ridiculously entertaining: she is the goofiest, most random person I've ever seen (at one point, she burst into uncontrollable giggles at the word "hooves"). For a while, we wondered if she was high on something, but really, we decided that that's just HER. Awesome music, beautiful songs, and a great experience. If it hadn't been for our unfortunate car accident on the way home, it would have been a great night.
