September has been busy, so busy. So little time to relax, and no less than two large books started.
Books:
* By the Sword by Mercedes Lackey (reread)
* Winds of Fate by Mercedes Lackey (reread)
* Winds of Change by Mercedes Lackey (reread)
* Winds of Fury by Mercedes Lackey (reread)
* The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern - I try not to read the popular books, mostly because I end up disappointed. This, however, was recommended by a friend in such strong terms that I had to read it. This isn't a book about a circus - it's a book about 2 people who are raised with the sole purpose of besting one another, in a forum that happens to be a circus... but a circus unlike anything you can imagine. The Night Circus is a place of magic and wonderment, with each tent more fantastical and whimsical than the next. The whole thing evoked Catherynne Valente's imagery and sense of fantasty, something that is so rare that it will stick with you. Read this. Please.
* One Salt Sea by Seanan Mcguire - merfolk, the next frontier of Faerie. 0_o Can't wait til the next one though.
Movies:
* Colorful (2010) - a touching, funny anime about a spirit who is forced into the body of a teenager who has tried to commit suicide. As the spirit attempts to figure out why his body tried to kill himself, he also struggles with human interaction and his own sense of mortality. Well drawn, surprisingly funny, and uplifting.
Museums 'n Stuff:
* Algonquin Park museums: Visitor Centre, Logging Museum and Art Gallery - surprisingly enough, I think that the Visitor Centre is one of the best diorama-based museums I've ever visited, right up there with some of the Biodome and Nature Museum's displays. They obviously have significant funding: there were lots of high-tech, expensive displays... but there were also the simple, light-up kind, with "find-the-animal" games and amazingly life-like creatures. Lots of fun for a rainy afternoon.
