a day's idle observations
Dec. 21st, 2008 04:04 pmi've found a veritable wealth of "bachelors" and even a few "bachelorettes" in my genealogical research. curiosity prompts me to ask: how many of these were gay? ugly? "simple"? there are so many questions and we'll just never know.
after hours of typing in the same locations again and again, i started wondering where exactly Étang-du-Nord was. my brain kept associating it with Petit-Étang and Grand-Étang, the locations of which i had already looked up, but they're in NB and this one is in Quebec. GoogleMaps to the rescue... and all of a sudden, i'm staring at a satellite image of a teeny, tiny island in the middle of nowhere. no wonder they're all living and dying there - it must be a heck of a trip to get to the mainland - which, btw, would be PEI.
turns out it's part of the Ile-aux-Grues archipelago - which also includes Grosse-Ile, the infamous quarantine center for Irish immigrants in the mid 1800s.
